Food Security

The price of weekly groceries and household items can be overwhelming for some newcomers. Food security is a foundational element of immigrant integration as it affects physical health, cultural connection, social integration, economic stability, children's development, employment opportunities, mental well-being, community support, and cultural exchange. There are multiple services available for residents of Alberta who are struggling with food insecurity. There is no shame in accessing these supports.

Emergency Government Supports

Emergency food benefits are provided through e-transfer to those who prove their need. To Apply online you will need a personal email, an Alberta.ca account, a bank account at a bank that offers Interac e-Transfers, and a valid Alberta driver's licence or identification card.

Community Fridge

A community fridge is a shared, publicly accessible refrigerator placed in a community space where individuals can donate and take food freely. These community-driven initiatives aim to reduce food waste, combat food insecurity, and foster a sense of communal support. They also provide an accessible and stigma-free way for individuals and families to access fresh and nutritious food when facing financial challenges or adjusting to a new environment. These fridges not only offer sustenance but also create a sense of belonging and inclusion within the community, helping newcomers feel more connected to their new home and its supportive network. It's a valuable resource that promotes food security and eases the transition for those starting anew in Canada. Search for local community fridges in your area. For example, one is located in downtown Calgary via the Beltline Community Fridge.
