Cultural Differences in Networking: Canada and Ukraine

There are some cultural differences between professional networking in Canada and Ukraine.  In Canada, networking is viewed as a means to develop professional relationships and find new opportunities. Networking can include attending in-person networking events, networking online through websites such as Linkedin or webinars/courses, and setting up informational interviews.

In Ukraine, networking is also highly valued, but the approach to networking is often more formal and hierarchical, and it most often occurs through already-established connections and professional referrals. Examples of Ukrainian networking practices include:

  • Established Professional Connections: Networking often revolves around existing collegial relationships. Staying in touch and maintaining strong ties with colleagues can be crucial for professional opportunities.

  • Recommendations and Referrals: Personal referrals and recommendations carry significant weight in Ukrainian networking. Professionals often rely on trusted connections to introduce them to potential employers or partners.
